Below are some of the nice ideas we've had that didn't turn out (the way we expected):

Two Failed Attempts to Create An Implicit Association Test for Appearance Satisfaction

Existing measures of people's satisfaction with their appearance (e.g the Body Esteem Scale) rely on self-report. In this project, we attempted to create an Implicit Association Test (IAT) for appearance satisfaction. Under timed conditions, participants had to categorise words relating to themselves (e.g. me, myself, I) and both positive (e.g. attractive) and negative (e.g. ugly) words related to appearance. However, in two separate studies variants of this IAT showed only very weak, and more importantly inconsistent, relationships with pre-existing measures of appearance satisfaction.

(There will almost certainly be more exciting failed experiments to report in the near future!)
